Artist Statement
Paulina M. Johnson explores the concepts of meaning and personal connection through the depiction of everyday objects, scenes, and iconic places. By capturing moments that trigger shared memories, she proposes that all of us have a connected life story and that art can incite empathy, kindness, and a sense of appreciation for one another. Paulina works solely in paper, utilizing it as a 3-dimensional sculptural medium. Paper strips of varying weights, lengths, and heights are adhered on their side allowing for a fun interplay to happen between the paper, light, and shadows. Paulina draws inspiration from a number of paper traditions including paper quilling, paper cutting, and origami, and marries them seamlessly with her graphic design background.
